"It Works When I Use It."
|
This is a comment that comes from skaters on a pretty regular basis. They're talking about using regular visualization, pre-competition routines, positive self-talk, breathing, etc. - the things that help them control their thoughts and skate their best.
How can we make sure that we use these mental toughness techniques when it's really important to do so? How do the best athletes make sure they use these same techniques when it's really important for them? You know the answer - we use these mental toughness techniques every time. Always use them, in every practice, all exhibitions and every competitive performance. That's the only way to make sure we're going to use them in the really important competitions.
Here's how: 1) Practice your breathing every time you skate in practice, exhibitions, and competitions. That's the only way you can guarantee that you'll use it at critical moments. Using good breathing will help you skate your best at those critical moments.
2) Believe that everything you do in practice with focus and attention will make the winning difference. This is the disciplined thinking that separates the best skaters in the world from everyone else.
3) Use mental rehearsal when you practice and before you compete. It focuses your attention and preprograms your body to successfully accomplish whatever you're preparing to do.
4) Practice and compete with the discipline it takes to use your routines every time, and to be looking for every performance to be your best. This discipline is very difficult and it separates the best from the rest. This discipline breeds success and the success breeds confidence that you can do it again next time.
Practice with tremendous focus and discipline in the coming months. Let's see how far your skill, discipline and competitive determination will take you in the coming competition season!
